Lillian Vernon was founded by a German immigrant of the same name.  Lillian opened her home based, mail-order business in Mt Vernon, VA in 1951, originally named Vernon Specialties Company.  Soon she expanded the product line, sold through catalogs and later online.  In 1965 Lillian Vernon Corporation was created. She was a pioneer in the mail-order industry, she was the first woman to found a company traded on the American Stock Exchange.  Vernon sold it to Zelnick Media in 2003. The company has since changed hands a number of times. As of 2008 it is owned by by Current USA, a division of the Taylor Corporation.
